Term 6
Maths:
This term, Year 3 will focus on place value, working with numbers up to 1,000 and beginning to explore decimals, understanding tenths as parts of a whole. They will practise calculation and measurement skills, including addition, subtraction, and using standard units. Pupils will deepen their understanding of fractions, identifying and comparing unit and non-unit fractions. In geometry, they will study shape properties and angles. The term will also support a smooth transition to Year 4, building confidence in key maths concepts.
English:
In writing, Year 3 will explore The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Todd-Stanton. Pupils will write their own innovative alternative endings to the story, using imagination to extend the narrative. They will also create explanatory texts to describe how the sea is being damaged, developing their ability to write clearly and informatively about environmental issues.
Reading:
This term, Year 3 will continue building on their reading skills and knowledge. They will develop abilities in inference, prediction, retrieval, summarising, and sequencing while exploring a range of texts. Pupils will also deepen their understanding of characters, themes, and vocabulary to enhance their comprehension.
Science:
This term, Year 3 will identify what plants need to grow healthily and describe the structure and function of the parts of flowering plants. They will investigate how plants transport water, learn about the life cycle of flowering plants, and explain different methods of seed dispersal. Pupils will also plan simple enquiries, complete and interpret data from bar charts, suggest improvements to investigations, and use their results to draw conclusions.
Geography:
This term we are focussing our Humanity learning on Geography, we will learn to locate cities in the UK and describe the differences between villages, towns, and cities. They will use Ordnance Survey (OS) maps to identify features using the legend and follow simple routes. Pupils will also explore different types of land use and discuss reasons for the location of both human and physical features in the landscape.
P.E:
In P.E we will focus on developing athletic skills including running, jumping, and throwing. Pupils will work on improving their speed, coordination, balance, and stamina through a range of activities and drills. They will also learn about pacing and the importance of technique to enhance their overall athletic performance.
Design and Technology:This term, Year 3 will draw and label a simple castle, including its most common features. They will recognise that castles are made up of multiple 3D shapes and design their own castles with key features to meet a given purpose. Pupils will practise scoring and cutting along lines on 2D shape nets and use glue to securely assemble geometric shapes. They will apply these skills to build more complex structures from simple shapes. Finally, pupils will evaluate their work by answering simple questions to reflect on their designs and constructions.
