Writing

At Our Lady of Lourdes, we believe in a holistic approach to the teaching of English. Our vision is to provide children with opportunities to develop their passion and skillset for reading, writing and oracy in a cohesive way. Our English curriculum is carefully planned so that children become confident and creative communicators, who will be able to use these skills effectively in their future endeavours.

Aims of Writing at OLOL

* To provide all our children access to a range of texts which will expose them to rich vocabulary.

* To foster all pupils' interest in writing and offer a reason and context for writing which enables the children to write for a purpose and audience.

* For all pupils to develop a clear understanding of the writing process in order to establish themselves as an author in their own right.

* To develop all pupils’ spelling, grammar and punctuation skills to increase the impact their writing can have on the reader.

* To develop all pupils’ ability to evaluate, edit and revise to increase the impact of their own writing.

* To produce confident writers who are not afraid to take risks, are proud of their writing and can apply their skills in a variety of contexts.

The Learning Journey

We use a three-phased approach to extended writing. In the first phase, pupils are immersed in the text type through a hook. In the second phase, through this context, they learn and apply grammatical skills to short writing opportunities. In the third phase, they plan, draft and revise an independent piece of writing, to include the features of the text type and the grammatical skills they have learned. Within the learning journey, opportunities for reflection are woven throughout. All children from EYFS to Year 6 a provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum.
